ISBN (International Standard Book
Number) refers to a number not a barcode. It is a
distinct, numeric business identifier depending on
9-digit Standard Book Number (SBN) code. ISBN was
created in 1996 by Gordon Foster.

ISBN 10
International Organization for Standardization developed
10-digit ISBN format which is renamed as International
Standard Organization ISO 2108 in 1970.

ISBN 13
ISBN 13 is comprised of 13 digits supporting Book land
EAN 13 and expanded in January 1, 2007

ISBN structure covers subsequent 4 or 5 sections:
1.
A GS1 prefix 978 or 979 designating industry, here, 978
indicates book publishing.
2.
Group Identifier
3.
Publisher Code
4.
Item Number
5.
Checksum character or a check digit
Group, Publisher, Title and Check digit are detached
through the implementation of either a hyphen or a
space. All elements of ISBN enclose different number of
digits with the exception of check digit.
